Frequently Asked Questions
Can Arkansas residents order an At-Home Paternity DNA Test?
Yes. Arkansas residents can order an at-home paternity DNA test kit. Unlike New York State, Arkansas does not have rules that restrict residents from purchasing an at-home paternity test kit.
How long do Home Paternity Test results take in Arkansas?
The turnaround time for results is two to three business days from the date the lab receives all DNA samples.
Upon completion of your results, your assigned DNA caseworker will contact you to provide a verbal update on the status of your results. A copy of your results will be sent to you by physical mail, and an additional copy will be sent to you by email. Thank you.
Are home paternity DNA tests accurate?
Yes. At-Home Paternity DNA Testing is highly accurate because the laboratory compares specific alleles inherited from biological parents. When DNA samples are properly collected, stored, and submitted to our partner laboratory, the lab will perform a reliable DNA comparative analysis between an alleged father and child.
Our partner accredited laboratory typically analyzes between 18 and 22 genetic markers during the paternity testing process to determine the probability of a biological relationship. In paternity inclusion cases, the probability of paternity is commonly reported as 99.99% or higher.
Can my Home DNA results be used for legal purposes?
No. Home paternity DNA test results are for informational use only and cannot be used legally in Arkansas. Need a legal paternity test? Learn more about our legal paternity testing service here.
What is the difference between an At-Home Paternity DNA Test and a Legal Paternity Test?
The main difference between an at-home paternity DNA test and a legal paternity DNA test is how the DNA samples are collected and how the results can be used. Below is a brief overview of each DNA testing service.
At-Home Paternity DNA Test:
An at-home paternity DNA test is self-collected and does not require an established chain of custody. The purpose of the test is to determine the biological relationship between an alleged father and child for informational purposes only.
Legal Paternity DNA Test:
A legal paternity DNA test requires an established chain of custody.
- An unbiased third-party DNA sample collector must collect the samples at an approved collection location or, in some geographic areas, through an onsite collection.
- All DNA specimens collected for legal purposes are submitted to our partner AABB-accredited laboratory for analysis.
- The established chain of custody allows the results to be used as documentation of a claimed biological relationship between a father and child—or another familial relationship—for purposes such as family court proceedings, child support cases, Social Security benefits, or adding or removing an alleged father’s name from a birth certificate.
Can I perform an At-Home Paternity Test without the mother in Arkansas?
Yes, an at-home paternity test can be performed with only the father and the child. The mother’s participation, although recommended if available, is not required for the laboratory to produce an accurate comparative analysis.
Can I use an at-home paternity test kit for my unborn child?
No. An at-home paternity test is designed to be performed after the child is born, not while the mother is pregnant.
Non-invasive prenatal paternity testing requires the pregnant mother to visit a sample collection site or have a DNA collector come to her home to perform the blood draw. At-home DNA test kits are not designed for self-collected blood draws.
Are my DNA results and personal information kept private?
Yes. Your information will remain private. The lab does not share data collected for DNA analysis with third-party companies. DNA samples are stored for an average of three months before destruction. Data may be shared only by court order but not before the client is notified.
