What is a non-invasive prenatal paternity test?

A non-invasive prenatal DNA paternity test (NIPP) is a DNA test that determines the paternity before the birth of child. It is a non-invasive way of acquiring genetic blood sample which is collected from the mother by way of blood draw.

The alleged biological father’s sample will be collected by cheek swab. Both DNA samples are shipped to a laboratory that may offer this service for testing. NIPP Tests can be performed as early as the 7th week of pregnancy.

Can my OBGYN do a prenatal paternity test?

An OB-GYN participates in the prenatal paternity testing process by providing a genetic sample.

Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS):

The earliest an OB GYN can provide a genetic sample is during weeks 10-13 of the mother’s pregnancy. The name of this procedure is called Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS). Although most mothers do not perform this procedure due to the possibility of a miscarriage occurring.

Amniocentesis:

There is small window were an OB-GYN can acquire a sample that can be used to perform a paternity test. This is during 15-18 week. If the OB-GYN suspects the child may have possible birth defect. The name of this process is called an amniocentesis.

Both procedures carries risk and cannot be performed solely for the purpose of determining the paternity of a child.

Does Paternity Express offer Non-Invasive prenatal paternity testing services?

Currently. No. We currently can offer services for invasive prenatal testing where we will work in tandem with the mother’s OB-GYN.

How much does Non Invasive Prenatal Paternity Test cost?

NIPP tests can range $1200 to $2000. Finding a lot of companies in that offer non-invasive prenatal services may be a challenge.

Are Prenatal Paternity Test results court-admissible?

Yes. An Invasive prenatal paternity tests results can be legally admissible document if your DNA test is performed by an AABB accredited DNA testing laboratory.

We are unaware of NIPP test being a legally admissible document because our partner laboratory does not offer this service and, we are unaware of any AABB accredited laboratory offers this service.

Is there a Home Prenatal DNA Paternity Test Kit?

No. Unfortunately there is not a home DNA prenatal paternity test kit we are aware of on the market.
